Student Clubs

The Garage

The city has its fair share of student clubs with £1 Jagerbombs and a DJ who constantly lets you know where you are over the mic. It's guaranteed that you'll end up in at least one of them with all your mates singing chart songs that you didn't even know you knew. Welcome to Sauchiehall Street!

Sauchiehall Street

On Sauchiehall Street you've got an array of clubs and pubs to chose from. If you're into cheap drinks and laughs then ABC is one of your best bets for a fun night out. On a Thursday they host Jellybaby which is probably one of the most popular student nights - you'll most definitely get a free pass in your fresher's week. Beware of the queue though, you'll be walking from Scott Street in your heels if you get there too late!

Other cheesy pop or chart music-tastic nights out on Sauchiehall Street can be had at the Garage, Campus and O'Couture. You can't miss the Garage - it's the one with the big yellow truck sticking out the wall. It specialises in pop and r'n'b and has lots of themed nights. O'Couture is the second of the chart music biggies on Sauchiehall Street. It's also a great day-time place to eat & drink as it offers free pizza when you buy a drink.

If X-Factor's your thing then head to Campus. Take part in Campus' X-Factor Karaoke competition and you could be singing onstage just before a headline X-Factor finalist. Campus devotees come out in force during Freshers' Week - even giving away free hoodies.

Around Campus

If you can't wait the 5mins it takes to get into town, then the two unions at the University provide a host of the most accessible and cheapest club nights in town. The QMU's Cheesy Pop is exactly what its name suggests: a night of cheesy pop music. Your wallet won't suffer too much - drinks cost a pound.

GUU's venue, The Hive, has 9 different bars which are loud, messy and cheap. Every year the GUU puts on its black tie event Daft Friday - following some theme or other. The brave can try a famous Pint of Fun (3 shots and a VK in one cup). We're obliged at this point to put a health warning in here, so here goes 'always drink alcohol sensibly'.

Aside from the unions there are 2 other clubs in the West End - Viper and Boho. Viper is found on Great Western Road and is a small club with cheap drinks that EVERYONE goes to at least once in their uni lifetime. It's the local haunt for many of the uni sports clubs too. The music is chart stuff but requests are taken for anything from the Cheeky Girls to Nirvana. Always a fun, sweaty night out.

Boho is on the other side of the uni on Dumbarton Road. This club is not the chilled out place the name suggests. Music wise it's similar to Viper though a bit pricier but still worth going to - even if only for the cage dancing!

Around the City Centre

At some point, though, you should treat yourself to a night at one of Glasgow's more musically orientated clubs such as Subclub, La Cheetah or The Arches. These clubs have the biggest and best sound systems in the country and regularly put on nights from some of the UK's leading electronic music label's such as Numbers, Optimo, LuckyMe and Fortified.

The city centre is a hub for all kinds of late night dancing and hedonism, the most hedonistic being Menergy, a club run by the city's most fervent of drag queens, combining rare disco and italo with performances from some of the most elaborately dressed men you are likely to encounter. Another popular place is the O2 Academy which is home to Club Noir - Glasgow's burlesque club. They put on a number of different performances throughout the year and it's fetish dress only - dig your PVC cat suit out and you'll fit right in.

But if basement clubs and masculine glamour aren't your thing, then perhaps you should check out the indie, soul and electro nights of The Flying Duck and Buff Club. Kushion, Karbon and Bamboo are R'n'B chart places scattered around the city centre. Karbon especially is popular with non-students so go there if you're bored of Primarni chic but still want £1 VKs. Either way your new favourite club will be found.

Glasgay!

Glasgay! is the name of the annual celebration of queer culture that takes place October- November each year and Glasgow has a pretty big Gay scene all-year-round (some would say big enough to rival Manchester's famous Canal St).

The unofficial gay centre is the Merchant City where you will find several of the city's major gay venues, including the famous Polo Lounge, Delmonica's and Bennets.  Admission is pretty cheap as are drinks.

On the whole, though, Glasgow's mainstream clubs and venues are really Gay-friendly and you're just as likely to meet new people in the Garage or ABC as you are in the Polo Lounge. For more information about the latest Glasgow University LGBT news, events and club nights visit www.gulgbt.co.uk.
